The GymMatrix Story

GymMatrix was created to bring professional, personal training to people of all income levels and fitness levels.  Members of our gyms range from first time gym goers to professional athletes.   Our group setting combined with the experience of our professional trainers provides the ultimate style of fitness for everyone to get the results they are after.

The GymMatrix Group Training concept was conceived from an off-season professional football training program. In the fall of 2009 Stephen Smith, at the age of 46, and with the goal of playing arena football for the second time, sought the advice and expertise of Coach Duke Rousse. “Coach Duke”, is the owner of the Duke Academy, a professional athletic training center located in Kenner, LA (thedukeacademy.com). Coach Duke is well respected around the NFL and has trained a host of professional athletes including Deion Sanders, Darren Sharper, Adam Pacman Jones, Dez Bryant and many others.

While training with groups of athletes under Coach Duke, Smith had an idea. What if the same “style” of training was tailored for a mainstream fitness audience and delivered in a 1 hour training session with small groups of clients? The GymMatrix fitness “style” was born. This new style of fitness would be practiced inside of a neighborhood gym. The gym would be coed and open 24/7 for workouts. The group training sessions would be tailored to meet the needs of 25-54 year old female demographic. The new gym concept would be offered as a franchise to aspiring entrepreneurs who could meet a very rigorous set of standards.

In December of 2009 Smith approached Jessica Matherne to offer her the position of Sr. Director of Operations for the new franchise. After discussing the opportunity with her husband Todd, she accepted the role and began her work in January 2010. Development of the new concept was begun in earnest at that moment. On October 2, 2010 the first location was opened in the Uptown area of New Orleans. The gym was built out of a space that was previously occupied by Blockbuster in a popular strip center not far from Tulane University and the Audubon Park. Members love the new concept and membership sales continues to be very positive! Now the sky is the limit with locations in New Orleans, on the Westbank and in Slidell ….stay tuned.
